Your Child’s First Visit: What You Can Expect

At Magnolia Family Dental, we help make each of your child’s visits easy, stress-free and even fun—starting with the first. As your child’s dentist, our primary goal at this first visit is to familiarize your child with our office, dentists and our team so that we can establish a relationship of trust with your child. We will also examine and clean your child’s teeth in a way most appropriate for their age level. Following, Dr. Smith or Dr. Bittler is happy to answer any questions or concerns you have.

The Importance Of Caring For Baby Teeth

While baby teeth will inevitably fall out and be replaced by permanent “adult” teeth, they should not be overlooked. Healthy baby teeth benefit your child’s dental health and play an important role in your child’s nutrition and their ability to eat and chew. They also save space in the mouth for the permanent teeth and help guide the teeth in place. Keeping them healthy, strong and free of cavities is a vital part of setting your child’s smile up for success.

First Visit FAQs

Bringing your child to a new dentist or to the dentist for the first time can understandably feel intimidating. We take a judgment free approach, and you should never feel ashamed for asking questions about your child’s dental care. If you have questions about your child’s first visit or about taking care of their teeth, check out some of our frequently asked questions below.

Leading up to their first visit, make sure your child knows what to expect. Explain that our team will talk to them, show them around the office, and gently take a look into and clean their mouth. To help them understand, you can say that dentists are doctors for their teeth and we help keep their smile healthy. Feel free to bring your child’s favorite toy along to their appointment to help comfort them.

Healthy and strong smiles start at home. Help your child learn to take care of their teeth by either helping with or observing brushing and flossing, depending on their age. Children can easily miss hard-to-reach places, and you should help them brush until around the ages of 7 or 8. They should brush for two minutes, twice a day, using a small (pea-sized) amount of toothpaste. You can model brushing for them by doing the same or play a fun song as they brush along. To further help prevent cavities, make sure to limit excess sugar and instead feed them a balanced, nutritious diet.
