Fixing just one imperfection can make a world of difference when it comes to both the health of your smile and how you feel about it! Dental crowns, also known as dental caps, are a way to cover damaged or decayed teeth. These restorations feel and function just like your other teeth, helping you smile again with ease.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A crown is a type of tooth restoration that treats a decayed, worn down, broken or otherwise damaged tooth. Dental crowns are often alternatives to dental fillings, when the decay is too extensive to fix. They can also be used to replace missing teeth by topping a dental implant, or they can be used on teeth that have been treated with root canals. Dental crowns come in several types and materials, with metal or stainless steel being good options for larger teeth and for their durability and porcelain a great option for ceramic crowns to blend in with the rest of the teeth and offer a seamless and cohesive look.

Benefits Of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a great option for helping damaged teeth retain their shape and appearance while improving or restoring their functionality. Some other benefits of a dental crown includes:

  • Reinforcing a tooth that has been treated with a filling
  • Providing extra support for a tooth that’s weak
  • Enhancing the appearance of a tooth with discoloration or other irregularities
  • Securing a dental bridge by anchoring it in place
  • Stabilizing a tooth that has been fractured
  • Shielding a tooth following a root canal procedure
  • Serving as the visible part of on top of a dental implant

The Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown typically involves two appointments. At the end, you will have a fully customized, finished crown that will look and work but like any of your other teeth.

At your first appointment, Dr. Smith or Dr. Bittler will generally:

  • Discuss the different crown materials and options, considering factors like the location and size of your tooth, your bite, your gum health and more

  • Shape the tooth that will receive the dental crown so it will fit properly and feel completely comfortable

  • Create a mold (impression) of the prepared tooth, which is then sent to a dental lab where your customized crown is made

  • Place a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the lab creates your permanent crown, which is usually made of acrylic or resin and will protect your tooth while you wait for your permanent restoration

At your second appointment, you can expect Dr. Smith or Dr. Bittler to remove the temporary crown before placing the permanent crown with special dental cement. Before you leave our office, our team will make sure your dental crown feels comfortable and fits well.
